Age Consideration

The school recommends that children should enter class one at a minimum age of ten (10) years. This is strongly encouraged. If they do at a lesser age they will be tempted to enter university before their sixteenth birthday. We feel that the best time to go to secondary school is at the threshold of adolescence especially when it involves leaving home to enter a school boarding house.

The Nigerian National Policy on Education specifies this age requirement as essential and infers that if children are rushed through the early stages, part of the purpose of the 6-3-3-4 system is being defeated.

Academic Structure

Pupils in each year group receive their lectures in a large well-ventilated classroom, fitted with two large white boards, black chalk board for geometrical constructions and a mobile graph board (for graph work). Each classroom is equipped with lockers for the pupils to keep their books and other items required for academic work.

A class teacher is appointed to take charge of each class for one academic session. There are two opportunities for class teachers to meet formally with their pupils on a weekly basis:

  1. Daily, during registration
  2. Weekly, guidance lessons

A class teacher is responsible for monitoring the academic performance and moral conduct of the pupils so as to make meaningful reports to the principal, school counsellor and parents.

Subject teachers are divided into departments, each being supervised by a Head of Department (HOD). The HODs convene regular department meetings to identify challenges and solutions and also meet the principal as a group and on individual basis.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Cityside secondary school is well-known for high academic standard anchored on comprehensive and robust extra-curricular activities that actualize our mission “to produce thoroughly rounded and motivated individuals that are equipped to stand tall and make positive contributions to our ever changing world”.

The extracurricular program is an important and an integral part of Cityside secondary school life. The school expects each student to be in one activity or the other to serve the following objectives:

  • The extra curricular programme allows pupils to develop and display skills that are not accommodated by class work for example, in athletics, gardening, music dramatics, public speaking, creative writing, chess, etc
  • Extracurricular activities provide means through which pupils may pursue excellence and achieve distinction in other fields of human endeavour, where academic distinction has become elusive.
  • The curricular programme helps to develop the sense of community and service as most of the activities involved are collaborative. Pupils are encouraged to work together within the contest of the activity. Moreover, many extra-curricular activities, for example, the service programme, choir, drama club, and the literary club are directed towards service of the school community.
  • The extracurricular programme provides invaluable opportunities for social contract and for forming friendship. Inter-class, inter-year, inter-school club activities bring pupils together and thus enabling them form good relationships with one another. The activities also allow regular and informal contact between pupils and teachers.
  • Extra-curricular activities allow Cityside secondary school to form social relationships with pupils from other schools. It is only through competitive and non-competitive contact with pupils from other schools.

In sum then, Cityside secondary school sees extracurricular as an important and integral part of the training of the individual. A student is a member of one or two clubs viz. readers club, Literary and Debating club Jets club, Sports, Business Club chess club, scrabble, table tennis, basket ball, soccer, volley ball, etc.

There is an experienced Guidance Counsellor to advise pupils on careers and other matters. Cityside “Annual musical concert” has become famous yearly event.

Boarding Facility

The school offers decent boarding facilities, creating congenial environment for pupils to develop their intellectual and physical talents to the fullest. There are two hostels under the system one for males and the other for female pupils.

There are well-trained housemasters and mistresses who live with the pupils, thereby creating a caring atmosphere. Meals are served by qualified chefs. Open days and visiting days are organized for pupils and their parents.

Dress Code

The dress code/uniform underlies morality and sobriety as the cornerstone of our education: pupils are expected to arrive in school each term wearing an approved school uniform. All pupils must attend classes each day in clean and neatly approved school uniform.

The approved school uniform includes:

  • Butter-colour shirt/blouses on green trousers/skirts
